Frequently asked questions

Question

What is the difference between open and closed cell spray foam?

Open and closed cell referrer to the difference between the small bubbles (cells) that make up the foam. Open celled is full of cells that aren't completely enclosed, they are intentionally left open. Closed celled is made of cells that are completely closed, so air and moisture aren't able to get inside the foam.

Question

What are the pros and cons of open cell spray foam?

Open cell foam expands much after it has been applied, allowing insulation in hard to reach nooks and crannies. Cost-effective, lightweight and excellent for soundproofing. Not fully waterproof and should not be used in areas prone to significant water exposure but could help identify potential moisture issues. Significantly lower R-value, meaning it will not insulate as well as closed cell spray foam.

Question

What are the pros and cons of closed cell spray foam?

Most energy efficient; can lower utility bills by up to 40%. Highest R-value. Provides moisture protection and controls humidity levels to prevent mold and mildew growth. Its structural integrity adds strength and stability to metal buildings. Recommended for extreme climate conditions. Is more expensive than other insulators.

Question

What is R-value?

A measure of insulation's ability to resist heat traveling through it. The higher the R-value the better the thermal performance of the insulation.
